The paper, starting from the historical event of the interdict to the Republic of Venice in 1606, investigates St. Robert Bellarmine’s contribution on potestas indirecta in temporalibus. In particular, the vision of a right based on Truth that characterized seventeenth-century reflection is analyzed, actualizing the problem of the construction of a personal and spiritual adherence to the state, also from a modern perspective.
