ABSTRACT

The paper focuses on the experience of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile on the Island of Elba and on the relationships with the clergy of the Diocese of Ajaccio starting from Ernesto Ferrero’s novel “N.”, by Giovanni Livi “Napoleon all’ Isola d’Elba” and from Alessandro Manzoni’s famous Ode “Il cinque maggio”. The article also examines the draft of the Constitution drawn up as part of a plan for Italian national unification promoted by some patriots, founded on the principle of freedom and equal protection of religions.
