ABSTRACT
A signature on a XI century document, probably autograph by Ansger, the first latin bishop of Catania, gives the opportunity to explore the personality of an underrated eccle- siastical actor of the norman conquest of the islamic Sicily. Searching for the man behind the myth, many historical reconstructions approved by precedent scholars are proved to be inconsistent, and in need of revision.
