ABSTRACT
This study will attempt to provide a brief overview of the state of end-of-life decisions before the European Court of Human Rights, subsequently with a particular focus on its connection with Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights – Freedom of thought, conscience and religion. First, I will try to briefly clarify the topic at hand, that being end-of-life decisions, by presenting the terminology, both colloquial and scientific and touching on why clearing up the definitions is important. Then, I will present insight into how the Court treats end-of-life decisions. Afterwards, I shall try to establish a potential connection with Article 9 of the Convention and end-of-life decisions, furthermore look at why this connection has been unsuccessful in the past. For the summary, I shall look to the future and present some very fresh developments in this topic.
