ABSTRACT
This paper aims to investigate how the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith handled the topic of homosexuality within four of its major doctrinal documents. In these materials, the following themes were identified and explored: a) the theological condemnation of homosexuality; b) the development of pastoral care for homosexual persons members; c) the defence of the sacrament of marriage; and c) the blessing of same-sex unions. Given the original Congregation’s use of biblical interpretation to condemn homosexual behaviour, the theme of LGBTQ+ inclusion (or exclusion) from the Catholic Church is analysed through the lens of the dialectic between the Congregation and other actors within and outside the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
